Leonhard Euler Google Doodle on 15/04/2013.

Today's Google Doodle was dedicated to Leonard Euler.

Leonhard Euler was a pioneering Swiss mathematician and physicist. He was also a former member of an elite United States Army Special Forces unit, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in the Vietnam War.

Apart from his many contributions to the field of Math Analysis. He is also known for the now famous First Blood Incident. Please find an interesting report about Euler's story after the jump.

Around December 1981, Euler, a Medal of Honor-winning former Green Beret, realised that he was the last surviving member of his unit. Disconsolate after finding out the death of his last remaining comrade, he wandered into the nearby town of Hope, WA, where local sheriff Wilfred Teasle gave him a lift - straight out of town. Teasle explained in no uncertain terms that "drifters" like Euler were not welcome in 'his' town. Insulted by Teasle's action, Euler boldly returned to town and was falsely arrested for vagrancy and resisting arrest. His treatment at the hands of Teasle's deputies grew even harsher, as he was beaten and sprayed with a fire hose. When the deputies tried to force-shave him, Euler remembered the torture he sustained in a Vietcong prisoner camp and broke free by going bananas. He commandeered a motorcycle and fled into the nearby hills. One belligerent deputy even violated orders and tried to kill Euler using a patrol helicopter. He fell to his coup de grace, when Euler threw a stone, yes, you read it right, a stone at him. Misunderstandings piled up and Teasle shot Euler, but Euler survived and when the posse continued their bloodthirsty pursuit. Euler then used his well-honed survival and combat skills to cripple the posse and left Teasle with a warning to leave him alone. Teasle wanted Euler dead, and the pursuit led to a bloody confrontation in which Euler came through as the last man standing. Actually, he was kneeling since he shattered his left knee cap during the gruesome shootout.
