I loathe listicles, even though I frequent Buzzfeed a lot. But here's a listicle I really loved. This definitive list of short books covers everything from sci-fi shorts to non-fiction from lit giants to classics from Hemingway. Do give it a look. And, use it to cheat a little, if you have an impossible reading resolution for the year. I'm closing at 13 right now. I've to finish 44 by the end of the years. Here's to impossible dreams and reading.
I'm not big on birthdays. (It's another day, another rotation around the sun, another year where you've taken baby steps towards the big plans.) Plus I've like 5 friends. Or possibly 7, on a good day. They know I'm not big on birthdays, so even the celebrations are a little low-key. But this year, was different. I was completely surprised by this colleague who wrote this (impromptu) poem to wish me. Even inspired me to do it for other people. Sharing it here. It put a smile on my face, and will make you smile too.

Today you were born many years ago,
Your parents brought you home from the hospital.
They think you will grow up to be great same day,
Maybe you will write a book, maybe a play,
Maybe you will figure out if unicorns really exist,
Or invent flying cars to take good folks around. In either case, that day ain't today,
So buckle your shoes and go on by,
Make a big birthday wish and onwards fly,
Towards making many more millions laugh,
And sometimes be sad and cry but always,
Through your words, the little characters
Make them feel a unique new way, in thoughts and action. Peace!

Introduce yourself, or someone else to Mumford and Sons. Even a stray single verse from Mumford and Sons contains so much depth, beauty, and poetry that The Chainsmokers (or any other contemporary band) would've to drop at least a thousand singles to catch up with them. For reasons beyond me, I forgot to play this song to someone who would have really, really loved it...so I'm just leaving it here. Not for nothing, it will at least find its way to you.

And, it was glorious. Well, decidedly more glorious than your dating prospects.

It’s to do with knowing and being known. I remember how it stopped seeming odd that in biblical Greek, knowing was used for making love. Whosit knew so-and-so. Carnal knowledge. It’s what lovers trust each other with. Knowledge of each other, not of the flesh but through the flesh, knowledge of self, the real him, the real her, in extremis, the mask slipped from the face. Every other version of oneself is on offer to the public. We share our vivacity, grief, sulks, anger, joy… we hand it out to anybody who happens to be standing around, to friends and family with a momentary sense of indecency perhaps, to strangers without hesitation. Our lovers share us with the passing trade. But in pairs we insist that we give ourselves to each other. What selves? What’s left? What else is there that hasn’t been dealt out like a deck of cards? Carnal knowledge. Personal, final, uncompromised. Knowing, being known. I revere that. Having that is being rich, you can be generous about what’s shared — she walks, she talks, she laughs, she lends a sympathetic ear, she kicks off her shoes and dances on the tables, she’s everybody’s and it don’t mean a thing, let them eat cake; knowledge is something else, the undealt card, and while it’s held it makes you free-and-easy and nice to know, and when it’s gone everything is pain. Every single thing. Every object that meets the eye, a pencil, a tangerine, a travel poster. As if the physical world has been wired up to pass a current back to the part of your brain where imagination glows like a filament in a lobe no bigger than a torch bulb. Pain.
Getting up on the horse is hard. But, what's harder? Getting back on that damned thing. Building momentum is hard. Losing it is easy. And, regaining it is even harder. Ask me. After a year of running and blogging every day, I'm here. I'm busier than before, but I know that's still an excuse. A good excuse but it's an excuse.
So, kids, please remember this. This blog will be back. I will be back in the running shoes. And, if you're trying to pick a habit, make sure you stick to it, cause once you lose your momentum, you are as good as done.

I love Tom Cruise. I've ODed on Jerry Maguire and A Few Good Men more than I would like to admit. But Tom Cruise has a problem that a lot of actors have...he simply is a star. So whether he is playing a pilot or a sports agent, he plays himself, and in the process completely ignores a huge detail about voices.

A voice can make or break a character. Here's a freakin' awesome video from the good folks at Wired that show which actors completely nail an accent. It's usually a detail you wouldn't notice till you know the region or accent yourself, but take a moment to acknowledge this. If an actor takes enough care to master a Welsh or Polish accent, you know the movie, and the acting will be far more superior. So by default this video becomes sort of like a compass that highlights actors who care about their craft, and of course, characters.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "guardian text egyptian web" , "georgia" , serif;">Breaking bad can't hold a candle to this. Check out this groundbreaking article from Guardian that points out how much of The Third Reich's achievements, including the invasion of France. <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "guardian text egyptian web" , "georgia" , serif;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "guardian text egyptian web" , "georgia" , serif;">Was Blitzkrieg, then, largely the result of the Wehrmacht’s reliance on crystal meth? How far is Ohler willing to go with this? He smiles. “Well, Mommsen always told me not to be mono-causal. But the invasion of France was made possible by the drugs. No drugs, no invasion. When Hitler heard about the plan to invade through Ardennes, he loved it [the allies were massed in northern Belgium]. But the high command said: it’s not possible, at night we have to rest, and they [the allies] will retreat and we will be stuck in the mountains. But then the stimulant decree was released, and that enabled them to stay awake for three days and three nights. Rommel [who then led one of the panzer divisions] and all those tank commanders were high – and without the tanks, they certainly wouldn’t have won.”

1 book offer. A lot of Spam in comments. 1 article that exploded on Faking News. These are just some of the highlights of my blog. I don't blog diligently, or share it a lot on social media. I just do it for the heck of it. For me. It's here that I write for myself - without any conditions, brand guidelines, or limits. Clearly the results aren't great, but I wasn't expecting otherwise. And when everything in my life is so result and data-driven right now, doing this one thing for the joy of it makes sense.

This is the 300th post. I wouldn't have taken a huge hiatus if I were at 299. Hope to get back in full swing again. Also, read this amazing quote in DH Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover: 'You are spending your life without renewing it'. Good stuff, that.

Also, if it's any consolation, remember Matthew McConaughey gave this a try...no one cared either. In fact, before last weekend his blog had hits in just triple digits. Pretty sure all he had to say was - 'Alright, alright, alright.'

Hey, man. How are you doing? You've come a long way. Way further than most people thought you would. Well, who gives four flying fucks about what people think? Anyway, you've got much further to go. You will get there. But let's talk about all the places you aren't going to get to. No, I am not talking about you working as a double agent or a spy. Or your dreams of being a professional gamer. It's about those other things. It's about the things you wanted to do with your life. The other side dreams. These beautiful sub-projects you had but...

But, you know these will be just mere thoughts. Or afterthoughts. Or daydreams inspired those who will be living your dreams. These are just fireflies in a jar. They will burn bright but they will die out. And, die, they must.

What will you do then? Grieve? Of course, why wouldn't you? But, don't grieve too much. It's not worth your time. You don't feel bad for not being the next Kimi Raikkonen. Or the next Misty Copeland. Cause you just weren't meant to do those things. Or be great in those ways. And, that is okay.

You are meant to be great in different ways. Your story will have a happy ending. But not every chapter of it will end happily. So, suck it up. It's okay, really. Besides, you will get where you have to far more quickly without carrying the baggage of broken dreams. Physics, right? Not your strong suit. I know that. But, its laws apply. To everything.

It basically schooled Buzzfeed on what Buzzfeed does. I don't think listicles will ever classify as high-brow writing but when done right and with the right intent, they can be pretty good. Case in point: this interactive map Vulture prepared where they handpicked the best jokes over the past 100 years and how they each came to shape modern comedy. Check it out.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If you work in the creative field long enough, you would know exactly what works. Whether you are a musician or a writer, you have a fair idea of what the pulse of the market is and whether or not what you create is in tandem with what is in defines where you stand both creatively and as a person. Boy, that's a long sentence. Would McEwan would be proud?!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Anywho, like so many others, I lost an idol this year when David Bowie passed away. But it's also given me an opportunity to learn more about Bowie, about what he stood for as a person, as an artiste and of course, discover some of his unheard hits.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So, when I was reading or rather discovering how Bowie was a big influence on Trent Reznor, I was surprised to see Reznor mention how Bowie chose to play the songs he wanted to play when they were touring together. Nearly all musicians know which of their songs concertgoers come to see. Not all of them have the courage to go ahead and do what they want. I hope you and I both can follow the Starman here and stay true to our tastes. Whether or not that gets us a lot of applause is irrelevant.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Excerpts from the Rolling Stone Interview:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">At one of our first meetings, in rehearsals, we were talking about how the tour was going to go. I was faced with a strange predicament: At that moment in time, we'd sold more tickets than he did in North America. And there's no way on earth David Bowie is going to open for me. And on top of that, he said, "You know, I'm not going to play what anybody wants me to play. I just finished a strange new album. And we're going to play some select cuts from a lot of Berlin trilogy–type things, and the new album. That's not what people are going to want to see, but that's what I need to do. And you guys are going to blow us away every night." I remember thinking, "Wow. I'm witnessing firsthand the fearlessness that I've read about."
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">...

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">There was a subdued reaction to him for the most part. In the environment of an outdoor-amphitheater rock concert in the summer, people with 32-ounce beers probably would have preferred to hear "Changes," rather than an art installation on stage. He did what he wanted to do. That made an impression. And I think about that anytime I'm going to ask for your attention or your money in some capacity.

I hitchhiked to L.A. at the first opportunity. When I arrived, the people were sun-kissed and the rampant depression was barely noticeable compared with New York. You can hide all manner of mental illness with a solid tan and veneers.

The conflict between NYC and LA is as old as time. Both have their perks. Both have their place in creative circles. And, honestly, they don't affect me much but this lovely article by Cirroco Dunlap made me chuckle. It talks about him briefly living between the cities and not being able to make up his mind what works better for him but it also works as a larger metaphor. It's about how we feel when we are stuck between stations - be it choosing a cosy day job or sweating it out at your startup or actually heading out for a night of wild debauchery with your friends or having a quiet night in with movies. Anywho, good read.
I love Sia. She's got a nice voice with great range. Her lyrics like most good pop lyrics have the ability to be both profound and silly and she's created a great image for herself. Most musicians aren't just about the music. And she said that she hated the idea of being in the spotlight so much that she started using the incredibly talented Maddie Ziegler as her stand-in. Nearly on all her performances/videos, Sia turns her back to the stage while Maddie performs a near-interpretive dance. Honestly, the last sentence makes the entire thing too diminutive. Just watch the video to know what I'm talking about. And, Wes Anderson has long been in the habit of creating these open-faced beauties in his film. Saoirse Ronan, Gwyneth Paltrow. You get the drift. It's only a matter of time before Maddie and her dance moves get the Wes Anderson treatment.
Dear Writer of this Blog,

Been some time. New job's been keeping you busy but that tends to happen. I'm not going to chastise you for shaving your beard on the 29th of November. Most guys don't even know what Movember is about and since you have a beard through the year, you can't technically participate.

I'm writing to discuss something important. These days you tend to watch shorter movies. Anything around the 90-minute mark is your sweet spot. Anything over 2 and a half hours is something you skip for the day you are 'in the right mood'. And as intimately as I know you, anything you postpone is something you never end up doing.

All you need to do is stretch yourself. For your sake and for the sake of cinema. A good film needn't be long or short but a lot of good films tend to be longer. Carlos works cause it's technically a 4.5-hour movie. It drains you. Just as the lead character loses his youthfulness, his energy and his charm, the length of the movie only punctuates this point. That's not to say it was a pleasant experience - you were hungry through the movie, you caught a cold somewhere around the 3-hour mark and then, had a headache by the time the film finished.

It was also one of the best cinematic experiences of your life. That Scorsese movie you keep postponing cause it's 3 hours long could also be the best cinematic experience of your life. And you will never know it, unless you watch it. Actually, that's pretty much true for everything in life, right?

Today, everyone is hooked on miniseries. And television today is more cinematic than ever but cinema is cinema and it needs all the love it can get. Chances are you watching a depressing 5-hour-long black and white, Bella Tarr movie won't make a difference. Actually, I'm positive it won't. But like everything else, we would never know till you watch it.

PS: Not too sure about the Bella Tarr flick.

Love,
The Writer of this Blog.
More than ever, we prefer texting to actually speaking up. It's convenient and has its advantages but what happens is eventually we all wind up sending these harsh texts to each other. We type out our last words to people instead of saying goodbye to them. And in some unfortunate cases, these last words could very well be our last words.

http://thelastmessagereceived.tumblr.com/ is a project that collects the last texts people received from their loved ones. It's at once heartbreaking and eye-opening. Who here hasn't sent out a mean text to someone? So, yeah, the message is share someone's grief online and be wise enough to bite your tongue and not send that last text.

PS: The good people at Windows and Google, you help people recall e-mails they have sent. Why can't you help people recall Text messages too?
